Deep Space Nine

I think Star Trek started going down hill with the advent of Star Trek Deep Space Nine. Don't get me wrong. I loved the race of Ferengi. They might even be more interesting than the Klingons. But a great alien race does not make for an awesome TV series.

That does not mean that I did not watch my fair share of Deep Space Nine. However it marked the beginning of the end for me. You can only do so many sequels before a movie loses its charm. The same can be said about Star Trek.

I would rather rewatch the original Star Trek series than witness the Star Trek brand to fade from glory. Yeah somebody wants to keep milking the darn thing to this day. There may be some rabid fans who will put up with mediocrity. Not me though.

Star Trek NG

When Star Trek the Next Generation came out, I originally boycotted it. Who could replace the glorious original Star Trek cast? However I started hearing some good things. Then a friend implored me to give it a try. Me and my bro checked it out. We were hooked.

The writing continued to be good. And the characters were awesome. Like any other male, I had the hots for Deanna Troy. However I believe Lieutenant Commander Data was my favorite. How can you not love a robot who strived to be human?

My second favorite character was Warf. He struggled with being a Klingon in a human run ship. Now that's good stuff. He even got a hottie for a woman. You would think that you could never replace Spock. Warf was not a replacement. He was just another great character I could appreciate.

Kirk Here

I remember watching the original Star Trek on TV when I was a kid. The stories seemed so futuristic. In retrospect, some of the technology is not so hot. However the acting continues to be timeless. The key, I think, was the the trio of Kirk, Spock, and Bones.

Hey. Have you heard the joke about the black men on the original Star Trek? Every time you saw them in an episode, they would get killed off quickly. Don't let them go behind a rock or anything. All you will hear is a scream, and no more black man.

There was an exception. Ohura was central to the cast. I understand it caused a bit of a stir when Kirk kissed her right there on TV. Now I do not remember. Or if I did, it did not seem too big of a deal. But it was groundbreaking for its time.
